Shooting, Directing and Editing my First Professional Video

It’s often said that camera is one of the most addictive drug in the world. Once you get acquainted to it, it’s very difficult to not imagine the world in the frame as if you’re just a prime lens with a shutter speed of around 1/100 th of a second and minimum aperture of  F2.1 with extremely great low light capabilities. I know i’m not a “pro” with cameras , not even anything near. But still I love cameras and the idea of capturing the reality and that’s enough to drive me into this world of photography and videography and try what I can with what I have.

So, about a month ago I was given a chance to film a story for our Page named “Britanta : The Story” to cover a story of the first ceramic industry of Nepal. My previous experience with Videography was really not so formal and professional. All I had done till date was shot and compiled few videos about food mainly which were all hand shot, extremely shaky and unprofessional. Here, I could not afford that but still I had no any kind of video stabilizing tool nor had my camera or lens had any kind of Video stabilization feature built in. So , I really had to take footages very carefully and eliminate shaking as much as I can.

Equipments:

I had a basic entry level DSLR camera from Nikon and had a lens bought from secondary market. That’s all I had with me, the specifications of device I had with me are listed below:

Camera Body : Nikon D3200 DSLR, 24.2MP DX format – APSC Sensor camera

Lens : Nikkor 50mm F1.8 G

I even didn’t have A Tripod and we really looked very unprofessional while approaching for interview 🤣

Shooting:

I just planned to take few panning shots. So I had my elbows locked. But despite all the efforts, I couldn’t prevent shaky footages as it was difficult task for someone like me whose hands shakes even without a reason🤣. We also had another device for recording video, an Iphone. “Iphone 11 Pro Max” of Praibesh to be precise which was used to record the interview through a simple forward frame while I kept on taking cinematic shots from various angles I could think of.

Directing and Compilation:

After completing the Tihar, I started to compile the clips into a video. We had also taken a very long interview which was planned to be made into a long conversation style of video which I kept aside for a while as it wouldn’t need much editing. So I focused on the short 5 min video which was to be made. We had planned to put a voiceover part on cinematic shots and real voice of the subject in the shots where he speaks. Then I just wrote down everything he said in the interview and changes the order of the things said by him so that it’d be easier for the viewers to relate. Then I just put the clips in order, Synchronized the sound for different shots, corrected the color of different shots as much as I could and that’s all I could do.

Music and Voiceover :

Visuals part were done but still one of the most important part of the video i.e. music and voiceover was left. I decided to use piano for the background music as our Team member Aakriti is good in playing piano 🤣 . She sent a really good piano note and I used it right away. Coming to Voice over First i used my own voiceover which sounded terrible and thus again asked our savior Aakriti for voiceover. I asked her for the Voice over for 6 times and and got satisfied with it at the end.

And thus, it was my first experience with creating a video seriously. It looked something like this:
