Hey Welcome to looking back series where, I’ll be looking back at past events and programs that I had participated before and share my Experiences regarding it.

Today We’ll be Looking back at Civil Engineering Student’s Society (CESS) Nepal’s Civil Engineering Exhibition at Pulchowk Campus on 2018 where I was appointed as Coordinator for Photography and It’s related Events. I Carried out the photography of complete event along with some Sub-Coordinators & Volunteers helping me out. Being a Coordinator I also conducted a photography competition along with volunteers constantly helping me out.

Naming the Event: I Strongly Believe in first impressions and had to come up with a good, catchy and meaningful name for the event. I couldn’t name it something boring like “CESS photography competition”  as it would destroy my idea of organizing something creative with such predictable boring name. So I took help from my Saviour – google.com and searched for all possible sanskrit words that’s synonym to image and photography. Why sanskrit? well I believe that’s the “new cool” these days!.Being user of devnagarai script it’s very easy for us nepali to understand meaning of sanskrit and get the gist of event from its name. So finally my eyes tumbled upon word “pratibimba” which means “image” or “representation” in english and it was an instant okay for me!

Creating Guidelines : Naming the event was a first step but it wasn’t the only. I had to come up with budget for the event with detailed financial breakdown and create a guidelines for the event. So i created a guidelines such that required budget could possibly be recovered from the participants. Following were the guidelines for the competition :

  • This competition will be held separately of BE and +2 students.
  • Civil Engineering related photographs and painting under the theme of exhibition taken only by the competitors themselves and not modified in any case and not published or exhibited before competition are allowed.
  • +2 Students are allowed to include +2 Science related photographs and paintings too.
  • The maximum of 2 (two) teams will be registered for competition per institution.
  • Each team may have maximum of 3 (three) members.

Photographs should be submitted in accordance to following requirements:

  • Size: A3
  • Paper: Premium Glossy
  • Winner is selected on basis of 25% jury and 75% voting.
  • Submission deadline:
    23rd Magh 2 pm
  • For non-pulchowkians, registration Fees = Rs. 800

Creating the Brand: The event needed marketing and needed a good branding for that purpose. So with some skills and friends in media industry to help me , I decided to take this matter on my own hand. So I googled a bit, took some tips from my designer friends and created a poster for competition with some old posters and my edgy photoshop skills. The poster looked something Like this :

Marketing: For the sucess of event, participation from other colleges was very essential. So we had to increase the participation from colleges all over Nepal. For that reason we ran a marketing campaign via CESS Nepal in every potential colleges of Nepal through our volunteers. The invitation letter was sent to colleges and college administration was contacted to go and present about the event in every potential classrooms.

The D-Day: On the day of exhibition, we had total of 15 participants on the finals of the event. With help of our volunteers ,we’re all ready to exhibit the pictures and had our voting booth ready which was constantly accompanied by our volunteers. The photos were numbered from 1 to 15 and were then voted by audiences and rated by the judges. Apart from a 15th number picture which was a framed gallery , pictures from some participants allowed to post here are listed below:
